Diethylamine

PROPERTIES

Diethylamine (DEA) is colorless liquid which often appears brown due to impurities. It is volatile and has a strong unpleasant ammonia-like odor. Miscible with water and ethanol.

APPLICATIONS

PHARMA

There is an active ingredient diethylamine salicylate, which is a derivative of salicylic acid.

Diethylamine salicylate has anti-inflammatory and painkilling actions. This distracts the brain from the original pain and therefore reduces perception of the pain.

Another active ingredient commonly used in pharmaceutical industry is DICLOFENAC diethylamine (DDA) which belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

REPELLENTS

N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET-diethyltoluamide) is an active ingredient in most insect repellent products. It can be applied to the skin directly.

LUBRICATING OILS, GAS, PEN INKS

CORROSION INHIBITORS

Diethylamine is widely used as a corrosion inhibitor in lubricating oils (diethylamine complexes of borated alkyl catechols), in natural gas formulations, in ball point pen inks (diethylamine salt). One of the examples is the use of diethylamine as an activator which is believed to be incorporated into alkyl polysulfide used in corrosion inhibitors for gas wells.

RUBBER INDUSTRY

ACCELERATOR

Among the vulcanization accelerators a class exists of products which are defined as "secondary accelerators", useful as activators for thiazole-based primary accelerators. Example of such products is diethylamine. It is used to produce vulcanization accelerators such as zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and tetraethylthiuram disulphide.

Other uses:

Flotation agent and selective solvent for the removal of impurities from oils, fats and waxes.

Production of textile emulsions, dyes.
